Conceptual Book Cover
Project 02 - ART 235
For this project, we were asked to choose a classic novel and create three different book covers. One had to be typographic, one handmade, and one done by designer's choice.
I chose The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne as my book and read it to find the deeper meanings that you can't find in a google search.
Typography
For this one, I wanted to handwrite the letters in real ink. I used a paint brush and roughly wrote the title and author to give it a more organic feel. Then I position the words and colored letters red to spell "Hester" from the top down. Instead of the obvious option of coloring an "A" scarlet, I wanted to try something different while also portraying how the main character is forced to stand out from the crowd.

Handmade
For this one, I played with the idea of embroidery, which is a big topic in the book. Instead of showing the letter embroidered, I decided it would be fun to try something different and make the shape with the actual embroidery thread. Sort of like Hester and how her situation was unintentional, the thread unintentionally spells out her sin.
Designer's Choice
This one is my favorite of the three. I took pictures of a rose I bought and then brought it into photoshop where I adjusted the colors. The main idea I pulled from reading the book is that although Hester committed a serious sin, she became kinder and better than most in her town. She was made to seem a sinner on the outside but had a pure soul on the inside. I wanted to reflect this in the rose, showing the inner petals a crisp white to contrast with the dark red outer layer.
